Still Life

Still life is an arrangement of one or several objects, such as plants, foods, or common household items with a contrasting background or texture. There are two types of still life, formal and informal. Formal still life is the setting up of objects with a determined background and lighting. Informal still life is the capturing of objects in their natural lighting and surroundings.

Thoroughness: Overall, I took a total of 78 photos, but chose only 12 in order to complete the assignment. I spent probably a total of 24 hours working behind the lens. I had been trying to shoot as many as I could in order to get a variety of images to chose from. I shot these images throughout my time limit of a month or so. I tried several different image types and tried to develop variations in structure and lighting. At first, I had probably taken around 10 photos of the same subject matter, but in the end, I had chosen only one of each photo, showing diversity.

Originality: The things that I did differently from Photo One, in Oklahoma, was learning how to use different lighting options to gain the effect that I had wanted in order to achieve the right look for the image. I also got to explore more of my photographic eye and see what I can do without a teacher telling me what subject I needed to shoot. I tried several different techniques in taking my photos. These included adjusts with light, finding different angles to shoot from, and trying to capture stories instead of objects. The only ideas that I found online were what the difference was between formal and informal still life. Other than that, I didn't look to other photos to match. All I did was get some information for as to what I needed to capture and for what category they would fit under.

Composition: The arrangement of the photos, I found, is good and there are variations in the subject matter and how it was shot. There are good angles and have a good range of focus in order to tell the story of the image and to take the viewers eye to the main idea of the image.

Craftsmanship: The exposures were great because each of the different exposures helps to pinpoint emotion in the image and to make certain objects stand more than others. The lighting in each image was good as it brought out depth and tone. There was good focus, and the objects thata were out of focus were done in order to put emphasis on what the image is trying to point out. The enhancements were nicely placed, but some were rather too dark or too light in certain portions of the image.
